Saturday the 5th April 2025 – Combat Sparring Day.
We were very pleased with the turn-out for the sparring and the wide range of sparring opportunities for all to try at the level of their choice. The options on the day ranged from stand up (eg; with gloves, without gloves, one onto one, two onto one, etc), groundwork (striking, submission, etc), a mixture of these two, pushing hands, sanzhan catching, and more !!! It was such a good afternoon we lost track of time and continued for over an hour after the deadline !!
Sunday the 6th April 2025 – Principles and Applications..
Fortunately, despite the low numbers, we were able to focus on the application of the basics starting from the ground up. Correct structure, stances, having a firm base (when necessary!) and fast fluid movement, alongside correct breathing and body conditioning, were expanded on by using a number useful partner practice routines. We spent time focussing on the first four principles of Absorb, Float, Sink, Release so, changing partners in order to sense and adapt to a range of opponents was key to improving the applications. Use of two of the next Four Principles (ie; Pierce and Evade) quickly became apparent when judging accuracy and distance to targets highlighting the importance of foot work. It became clear that improving sensing was promoting better timing and accuracy which required less strength to generate appropriate power. We are hoping to expand further, with more people, on the next course? Details to follow...
The High Grade Xtra Training Course was held on Sunday the 27th of April. The time flew by as the students focussed on the higher end of their syllabuses. We managed to cover the higher grade form requirements without the issue of beginners with no experience in this area yet. It was also very nice to expand on the use of the 'short stick' for the self defence set sparring and combination attacks.
