The KIXX Martial Weekend started on the afternoon of Saturday the 17th February with the Fight Club Open Mat Sparring.
We would like to thank all of the participants for contributing to another non-stop session of sparring in various disciplines.
Everyone took advantage of the opportunity to try a sparring option at the level of their choice. Agree the rules first then spar.
It was nice to see the stand up kick boxing one moment then, groundwork, boxing, pushing hands or set sparring patterns, etc, next. Any option is available when we have a wide range of people and skills present.
Please look out for the next Fight Club Open Mat Sparring Session on SATURDAY the 23rd March from 1:30pm to 4pm...
Overview...
We started with introductions and a gentle warm up while we waited for the last one or two people to arrive. It was very fortunate for us to have a good number of people to practice with.
By starting with first principles and basics, it was logical to consider stance base and stance rooting practice with many partners. The definition of the stance parameters and objectives have been clearly defined in Grandmaster Han's, Nan Shaolin Wuzuquan books (for example, see book 3 page 13). This being a 'hands-on' course, we started training to test with partners soon as possible. A variety of partners certainly helped to refine the stance base to suit a wider range of input, intent, etc.
The Sanzhan Form was divided into three sections. So we started by practicing the first section or salute with a variety partners to feel and sense the movements from each person and evaluate the differences. The objective was to try to sense and consider Yi gong (mind), Wai gong (external) and Nei gong (internal) as the three battles within Sanzhan.
We were very pleased to hear from senior instructor, Martin (from Norway). He kindly gave us his thoughts and views with respect to the relaxation and meditative aspects of this section and of the form in general.
Following a brief discussion about the principles that were highlighted by Martin, we all decided that this would be good time to have a break for lunch and socialise.
After a short break, we restarted with section 2 which consists of the repetitive, three step forward and three step backward part of the routine. The importance of this section is made clear by the number of repetitions required. In order to practice and feel the variety of intents, skills and techniques of those present, we changed partners many times.
Section 3 is less repetitive so we broke this section in smaller parts for drills then reassembled for the form. The change of partners provided a good opportunity for those with more experience to help and share their standard with their partners.
The Pushing Hands practice was limited to keeping the feet still in an attempt to focus the sensing of intent and practice rooting. We all acknowledged that this was more of a 'game' to practice the stance than a competition for winners and losers. The chance to feel the differences between each persons application provided a lot of experience and helped to optimise the stance. With more time, this would have led to moving step and sparring.
Everyone enjoyed the conditioning via the limb knocking of arms and legs. The level of conditioning was applied relative to each persons ability.
We are looking forward to the next opportunity to get to know more people at our Martial Weekend Event on the weekend of the 8th and 9th of June 2024. More details to follow...
