We had another, very enjoyable, High Grades Xtra training session on Sunday the 1st of March. It was great to see some 'first timers' to this extra class. We spent more time of the weapons (cudgel) basics and form before moving to the Five Ancestors Sanzhan form which led us into some self-defence. After the class feedback was very encouraging and interest was high so we are looking forward to the next session.

Begins with...
Fight Club, Open Mat Sparring
On Saturday we started the Martial Weekend with a 'Fight Club' Open Mat Sparring session. There is a wide variety of sparring options, rules and levels of contact all of which needs to be discussed and agreed before a bout can start. Participants on the day enjoyed the practical side by trying to apply the principles required for 'self-defence' and other forms of combat. Some of these are; movement, conditioning, counter moves / strikes, takedowns and takedown prevention, pushing hands (for clinch work), set sparring for limb knocking and conditioning. The sparring experience provided plenty for discussion on the Sunday session...
Nan Shaolin Wuzuquan – Exploring Sanzhan
On Sunday we warmed up with long arms, short arms and man, heaven & earth sets the work the stances, tendons (connective tissue), posture and body conditioning. We then moved on the partner catching of the Wuzuquan Sanzhan Form. Healthy discussion took place with respect to technique and the objectives for improving the catching to develop and understand applications.
It was very interesting to compare the Yongchun White Crane Sanzhan form and catching with CJ as a guide to the requirements. The similarity of these requirements is incredibly close to our Wuzuquan Sanzhan (Han Kim Yuan).
Following a break, we continued with free style pushing hands to use the principles in a less rehearsed format. Firstly, we used a 'fixed step' approach for the improvement of base, structure and pliability. Then, moving step to avoid being stationary all of the time. Movement at the correct time is essential for redirecting intent and to capitalise on an opponents errors (ref clinch work, takedowns and takedown prevention...).
We finished the day with a close look at the stance, posture and footwork contained within our Twenty Punches Form and catching. Use of stance to maintain balance and posture despite the catchers attempts to disrupt the Form.
