About Wu Chi

aka Wujiquan (All Emptiness Fist)

Eastern culture has always seen the mind and body as intimately joined together in such a way that the mind exercises considerable influence over the physical body. This was not always the case in the West. Wuji enables you to relax and know that your calm mind can easily overcome any obstacle trying to force you off the road to peace and tranquillity. Wuji helps establish a balance between strength and flexibility much like a tree that is able to withstand hurricane force winds by firmly rooting at its base while passively yielding its branches as the wind dictates. Cooperation is thus favoured over competition. It seeks to reconnect the mind to the body, the conscious to the subconscious and the individual to the environment thus eliminating tension and anxiety.

Wuji is perhaps the easiest form of exercise to learn and practice. It does not require any special strength, coordination or athletic prowess. You can begin practicing Wuji right away and begin to feel the benefits the very first time you try it. And yet, like any other discipline, you will be able to gain greater benefit as you practice and refine the simple techniques. The more you practice the more you will develop a greater awareness of your body, its state of balance and tension. You will always be able to improve the alignment of your skeletal system, thereby enabling you to relax your muscles more and more. The teachers tell their students, “No matter how relaxed you are, relax some more.”

The only physical attribute necessary to practice Wuji is the ability to breath. Therefore if you are alive you have everything it takes for Wuji. When all is said and done, the most important element in Wuji is your mind. The mind can more than make up for any physical limitations. Western exercise utilizes either strenuous movement or resistance to movement to increase bodily strength. That requirement often precludes the elderly, bedridden or handicapped from gaining the benefits of daily exercise. Wuji provides the perfect exercise for those unable to participate in more vigorous exercise programs. Both men and women can enjoy the positive effects of Wuji equally.

Wuji does not require any special equipment or location. Practicing Wuji does not cause you to sweat. Therefore it is not necessary to wear special clothes or take a shower when you are finished. That means you don’t have to spend extra time before or after practice.

With all the pressure of today’s hectic society it is extremely difficult to let go of the many factors that create stress and tension. Considering jobs, mortgages, insurances, traffic, etc, etc that clamour for your attention. It has been shown that your mind and body form a feedback loop. When your mind is calm your body will be relaxed. Muscle tension will be the minimum necessary to maintain structural integrity. In other words, your body will be in a state of balance. A balanced body has a different feel from one that is out of balance. An out of balance body feels like it will topple over any moment. That feel causes your anxiety level to be higher than it would if you felt solid and secure. Wuji teaches you how to hold your body in a balanced state. It also teaches you how to calm your mind and relax.
